This is a sexy, sexy little pan, gorgeously cast (among the nicest castings I’ve seen) and a mystery to boot. It was a mess when we found it, and even then we were intrigued. After all we had no idea who A.C. was but the pan was clearly old, and had a separately cast handle that was later peened into place. Determination of origin came from the #4 size – a European sizing for older cooking pots. Extensive research has shown this to be French made. Cooking surface is very lightly textured, as it was smoothed but not stone polished. Sits dead flat.

Marked: “4 AC”  with the AC in a stylized font, inside a cartouche style logo on the bottom of the pan.

    10” 3/4 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips, or wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.   Cooking surface is lightly textured.  Will only get better and smoother with with use.

  • #1415 oddly numbered 9 handled griddle with gate4

At first glance this seems a very ordinary fancy handled round griddle, but when you turn it over you see a very unique handle design and unusual marking.  I have no clue who made this piece (and I’d really like to know as it is one of the coolest handled griddles I’ve ever stumbled across).  Handle is hollowed on the upper side with what almost appears to be a deep well at the edge where the handle meets the griddle.  Cooking surface shows some some big voids where pouring occurred and air or debris was trapped.  Outside of that area surface is very nicely smoothed.   Bottom has a nice distinct inset heat ring.  Inside the ring you can see minor pitting from use on a wood stove.

    Only marking is a “9”

    10” 1/2 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips.  Small wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.   Cooking surface primitive with some casting flaws but pretty good for the age.  Will only get better with use.

  • 1934-unmarked-7-favorite-handled-griddle1

    Item 1934

Favorite never made a handled griddle smaller than this one and it is a VERY uncommon piece as it is even smaller than the Wagner #6 round griddle.  You can still see the ghost of where the Favorite Piqua Ware was blocked out on this skillet.  Made between 1916-1934.  This one is a true collector piece in outstanding condition.  Sits flat, great polishing marks (often incorrectly called mill marks) and a glassy cooking surface.  Ready to be used or hung on a wall.  Only flaws on this piece are flea bite tool marks (very fine) and typical casting flaws.  The stone polished cooking surface (factory done) is beautiful.  Bottom shows that the polishing was only done on the cooking surface.  Really a special piece.

Marked: “7” with what appears to be half a “B” on the bottom, where you can also see where the Favorite Piqua Ware logo was blocked out..

    8” 5/8 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips, bow or wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.   Cooking surface is glassy with very few flea bite tool marks.  Will only get better with use.

This is a really old piece in collector grade.  Pretty, old gate marked handled griddle made c. 1870-1880 (roughly 150 years old).  Great cooking surface with great polishing marks and a few scars.   A great example of smaller foundry work.  WIll be a great user.   This one has a little history and a lot of character.  Bottom shows pitting from use over a wood stove.  Inset heat ring.  Small mark under handle could be an “x”, outside shows some casting marks.

Marked:  “8” on handle maybe a tiny “x” under the handle

    10” diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips or bow.  Bit of a wobble on a sheet of glass.  Nice cooking surface with some flea bite tool marks and some scars from use.  Should fill in as it gets some kitchen time.  Outer casting is a bit cruder, and shows some roughness and even light pitting.

Collector Grade!  Just a real wow!  This one probably came our of the same foundry as #1952, but this one looks like it could have been cast yesterday and not 140-150 years ago (and this one has a polished surface, not the unpolished one like #1952 does).  It is that clean.  This one is a handled griddle (round griddle) with heat ring and the fancy handle and a beautiful clean bottom with almost no wear.  Has the raised letter X on the bottom ~ 3/4” high.  Some casting flaws are present but wow this is pretty with a well polished cooking face that is glassy to the touch, although the casting flaws can be felt.
This is a cool piece which can be used or hung on a wall.

Marked: “7” on the handle, and “X” on the bottom.
    ~ 8” 7/8 diameter
Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil
No cracks, chips (there are two areas of casting void in the heat ring).  Slight wobble due to center pour gate mark. Cooking surface is glassy and smooth save for the areas where the casting flaws are visible

Amazing older piece and I’ve never seen another like this.  More of a half skillet/shallow skillet than handled griddle because of higher walls than you see on griddles (1/2” deep on the interior).  This one reminds me very much of the Martin shallow skillets.  Handle is hollowed on the underside, outset heat ring, high lip raised letters on bottom, decent cooking surface.  Sits flat. Casting quality overall is decent with some casting flaws.  Bottom shows some long time wood stove use with considerable light sulfur pitting and some deeper pitting from earlier in it’s life   Some minor roughness to the cooking face from past rusting, but very fine roughness that will smooth out as the pan gets used.  This is a really cool piece.

Marked:  “NE 8” in raised letters 1/2” high

    12” 3/4 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips, or wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.   Cooking surface primitive  but better than most comparable piece with some casting flaws and not fine polished like later pieces were..  Will only get better with use.

  • #1958 Lodge #10 old style handled Griddle1

    Item 1958

Please note all pictures on our site are of the actual piece you will receive, not a stock photo of a similar piece.  Additionally all our pieces unless marked otherwise are fully restored and seasoned.  Just wash them and start cooking.

You don’t find these often, a old style Lodge handled griddle in a size 10 (usually you only see #8s).  This one was made after 1930 as it does not have the raised 8 on the handle.  That means it was made roughly 1930-1950.  Heavily polished finish puts big swirl lines on the face so it’s really pretty, but it also adds texture you can feel to the piece.  This one should be a great user or a sweet wall hanger.
Marked: “10” at the 12 O’Clock position on the bottom.
Roughly 11” 1/4 diameter edge to edge.
Stripped to bare iron via electrolysis, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.
No cracks, chips, has a slight center bow (pretty typical of these pieces) which causes a slight bit of rock.  Cooking surface is textured from finishing (see the swirls from the machining) and should become smooth with regular use.  There is a casting flaw near the edge of the cooking surface, but it should not effect use or collector value
    $85 shipped.

I don’t believe this piece was ever used.  It’s just perfect.  Great polishing marks, sits flat, glassy cooking surface.  Really Lodge at it’s very best. This will be an outstanding user

    Marked: “70 8 7” on the bottom.

    9” 1/2 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

  • #1456 Handled griddle squad sk 7 w gate1

    Item 1456

Ultra light weight (just 2 pounds) very thin, handled griddle of the type thought to be “squad skillets” for the packs of traveling soldiers, or those on the road.  Hollowed top of handle in the fancy style with a delicate “7” in the hollow, unlike those seen on the more common fancy handled pieces.  Roughly a 1/4” wall around the cooking surface.   Large pouring flaw across the face from opposite the gate (pouring line) and running into the center of the griddle.  A very cool piece that should be preserved on someone’s wall.

Marked only with a 1/2” tall, raised, number “7” on the handle.

    8” 3/4 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips.  Sits on it’s gate as it was probably designed for open fire cooking (so it would wobble).   Cooking surface is crude due to the big pouring flaw but is nice outside of that.  Really a display piece but probably great for a Civil War re-enactor.

A sweet little piece indeed, a beautiful little handled griddle with heat ring and the fancy handle and a rather unique casting error – the eye of the handle was never cleaned out and it has a “iron” window across the hole.  Bottom gated.  Pretty cool, and it shows just what happened when the sand molds were not quite tamped down perfectly.  While the cooking face in the photos looks rough – it really isn’t and has been smoothed considerably and I do think it compares favorably with more modern Lodge piece.  what you see in that face are the pour marks, from the molten iron that was poured into the sand mold that shifted looser and and left marks from how that liquid iron flowed into the sand mold – they cover the entire face of the skillet.  This is a cool piece which can be used or hung on a wall.
    Marked: “7” on the handle
    ~ 8” 7/8 diameter
Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.
No cracks, chips (there are two areas of casting void in the heat ring).  Slight wobble due to center pour gate mark. Cooking surface shows the pouring flaws but is fairly smooth.  That said, I’d use this one as wall hanger.
