Please note all pictures on our site are of the actual piece you will receive, not a stock photo of a similar piece. Additionally all our pieces unless marked otherwise are fully restored and seasoned. Just wash them and start cooking.
Please note this is a repaired piece and will hold water and could probably be used as a humidifier but probably should not be used a regular kettle.
You see very little iron made by Richmond Stove Co. (of Richmond, VA) and even though this kettle had a crack we felt it was important to bring it back. Kettles by them are exceptionally rare. A lot of work went into restoration of this piece and it will hold water, and should easily handle boiling temperatures. It could be used as a humidifier, but we do not recommend using it as a tea pot or to prepare boiling water for consumption or food prep.
Richmond Stove Co. Was founded just before the Civil War and primarily focused on ornamental iron until about 1890 when their whole focus switched to stoves and heating equipment. I can find no references to hollowware being made by them after 1890. However this piece is older than that – as it has a blacksmith made wrought iron bail with a flat sectioned top and rounded bottom. That dates this to no later than 1870 as wire bails (which were much cheaper) became the norm. Kettle is beautiful and has the Richmond Stove Co name on the top of the removable lid. Lid has a ingenuous locking and removing mechanism which allowed the lid to be removed for cleaning and or filling and lock back in place for boiling and pouring. Has a drop bottom designed to allow it to sit inside a #8 eye of a wood stove. Some very minor pitting from wood stove use can be noted.
Crack was filled and repaired using a high heat epoxy, sanded and then the whole kettle was painted with high heat enamel.
Marked: “Richmond Stove Co.” on the top of the lid at the hinge mechanism. There is a large 8 on the bottom of the stove.
Size: ~10” Diameter at the widest spot 8” on the drop bottom.
Crack along the bottom has been filled. No chips. Beautiful historical piece.
As always we are happy to take back pieces if you are not 100% satisfied. (Please see return policy)
