This should be used as a display piece somewhere – maybe in a museum, historical house, or in a top notch private collection. This hinged old cast iron match holder / safe was made before 1850 and features a floral motif. It was certainly painted or plated with metal back in the day. This is an excellent casting and I’m tempted to think this was a Bradley & Hubbard Co piece (based on the fact we found it with several from that maker and the quality is similar) but there are no markings to tell me. This could easily be painted or japanned and restored to beautiful shape, but I did not want to ruin the as found look here (as I know less about match holders than cookware). But this is a cool as heck piece. There is a hairline crack in the lid about 1.5 inches long but it is stable and could be stabilized even more by repainting the box.
4” 7/8 x 3” x 1 (excluding height of lid).
Cleaned lightly but not restored. SOLD AS FOUND.
