  • #1971 #14 bailed griddle1

    Item 1971

Please note all pictures on our site are of the actual piece you will receive, not a stock photo of a similar piece.  Additionally all our pieces unless marked otherwise are fully restored and seasoned.  Just wash them and start cooking.

Collector grade! This one is a bit of a mystery, I’m not sure if this was sprue marked, bottom gated, or side gated.  Based on the style, I’d lean towards this being a 1870-1910 piece, and it has marks that look like, a sprue, a side gate, and under a bright light even a bottom gate.  Thus I’m basing the age on design and bail material (which says it was made after 1865 to possibly as late as 1920).  Really nicely designed and beautifully cast.  Spectacular polishing marks, New England style ears, and heat ring.  Almost glassy to the touch cooking surface – which isn’t quite perfect due to casting flaws, including  pour line where the mold wasn’t perfect and tiny casting voids (almost looks like very superficial pinpoint pitting).   Center of the griddle like many that were cast this thin shows a downward bow which could not be polished away.  Bottom shows some broad shallow pitting from use over a wood stove.  Edges show grind marks where the foundry removed flash, or a side gate.  Remarkable for the age.

Marked: Has a raised number 14 about 1/2” high.

    13” 3/4 diameter (excluding ears)

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil

No cracks or chips, and no movement when you rock it from the center.  From the edge you can get a tiny bit of movement BUT that’s due to the center of gravity on a piece this wide and this old.  There are some imperfections on the edge which you can see look a tiny bit like gate marks but it probably was from being touched up at the factory before it was sent out (see photo).  the center also has a bit of a bow, but that’s very common on pieces of this age, or even of this width.  This will be a glassy, top flight user after just a handful of uses.  This one is an absolute amazing example of an 19th century griddle

This is an great bailed griddle, over 100 years old.  It has raised number “14” and mold  on the bottom and New England style ears.  Cooking surface is outstanding, mostly flat and smooth but has some interesting pouring flaws, and a few tool marks.  The bottom shows a light uniform sulfur pitting which occurred from use over a wood stove.  Will be outstanding for pizza and the like.  Please note – bails on these were really for storage and stabilization, not for hanging your piece over s fire (they do tip).

Marked only “14” in raised numbers on the bottom.

    14” 1/8 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, or chips.  Tiniest hint of a wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.   Cooking surface is outstanding for the age, but not dead flat as pouring flaws provide some bumps in the surface.  Will only get better.

  • #1442 bailed griddle gated1

    Item 1442
Please note all pictures on our site are of the actual piece you will receive, not a stock photo of a similar piece.

    Unrestored.  Sold as found.

Very early bailed griddle c. 1850-1860 with New England ears, hand wrought iron bail and raised lip.  This is probably one of the earliest bailed griddles ever made.  The bail on these pieces was made more for storing the piece than it was for hanging over a fire BUT this one is so tight on the shifting it could have been used that way.   This is really a display piece, although it could be used if you really wanted to.  Piece has some pitting over the whole surface but after 150-170 years I’m impressed it’s this nice.  Gate marked on the bottom.

    12” 1/2 diameter

    Unrestored

    No cracks, chips.

Favorite never made a handled griddle smaller than this one and it is a VERY uncommon piece as it is even smaller than the Wagner #6 round griddle.  You can still see the ghost of where the Favorite Piqua Ware was blocked out on this skillet.  Made between 1916-1934.  This one is a true collector piece in outstanding condition.  Sits flat, great polishing marks (often incorrectly called mill marks) and a glassy cooking surface.  Ready to be used or hung on a wall.  Only flaws on this piece are flea bite tool marks (very fine) and typical casting flaws.  The stone polished cooking surface (factory done) is beautiful.  Bottom shows that the polishing was only done on the cooking surface.  Really a special piece.

Marked: “7” with what appears to be half a “B” on the bottom, where you can also see where the Favorite Piqua Ware logo was blocked out..

    8” 5/8 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips, bow or wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.   Cooking surface is glassy with very few flea bite tool marks.  Will only get better with use.

Collector grade! One of the prettiest bottom gated bailed griddles I’ve come across (to be fair I wonder if this should be considered more of a skillet griddle, or half skillet, as it has walls that are almost 3/4” tall around the edge)  Spectacular polishing marks, New England style ears and heat ring.  Almost glassy to the touch cooking surface – which isn’t quite perfect due to what I think was their inability to polish away all the pour marks from the gate in the dead center of the griddle (almost looks like very superficial pinpoint pitting).  Due to location, and a slight bow from that pour on the face I think it just could not be polished away.  Bottom shows some very light pitting from use over a wood stove, but in remarkable shape.

Marked: Has a raised number 12 about 3/4” high.

    12” diameter (excluding ears)

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil

No cracks, or chips.  Very small wobble when tested on a sheet of glass (off by about the thickness of a sheet of paper).  Cooking surface is almost glassy to the touch with some very minor pouring flaws that should fill in with use

    Item 1579

Somewhere about 1860 bailed griddles, which differ from hanging griddles, came into fashion.  The bails were more for storage than for cooking, but this one has a bail meant for lifting out of a stove eye and features a squared top bail instead of a rounded one.  As it is a wire bail, rather than a blacksmith made one it does date after 1864 when wire bails became available.  Bottom gated, with New England style ears, with a well defined 1/2” wide ring and a bottom designed to fit perfectly into a 10” stove eye so that the griddle would sit flush on the top of the stove.   Sits on it’s gate mark so it will wobble on glass.  some sulfur pitting, on the bottom and casting flaws on the cooking surface.

    Completely unmarked

    11” diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips.  Sits on it’s gate mark and not designed to sit flat, but will do so inside a stove eye.  Cooking surface leans towards the primitive but would have been considered great back when it was made.  You can see casting flaws and age.   Will improve greatly with use.

Collector grade.  An amazing example of small foundry work  This is what the manufacturers referred to as a deep long pan, but many still call a shallow fish fryer, poacher or griddle.   The truth is it can be used for any or all of those things.  Features a ~3/4” well, 1” wide lip  Interior on this one is gorgeous not quite glassy, due to the pouring flaws at the gate, but due to how this was polished it is not far from being glassy.  I think it will get there easily with just a little use.  You can see where the iron was poured in via the gates, on the cooking surface but the polishing has smoothed most of it away.  Double gated.  Bottom shows some wood stove use with roughness due to the sulfur released.

Marked on the bottom with a raised 8 near one handle and “Ex. C” on the other side.  Could this be an Excelsior?  or maybe it was designating it as Extra something (I can’t think what the C might have stood for)?

    22” 1/4 handle to handle, 20” 1/2 outer lip to outer lip x 10” wide,  inner cooking area ~ 18” x 7” 5/8

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks or chips.   Sits on it’s gate mark so has a short axis wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.  Cooking surface as good as you can hope to find on one of these.

    Item 2165

Unusual piece that was clearly made by a smaller foundry.  Made c. 1870-1880 (roughly 150 years old) it has a very large, off center 8 on the bottom which was clearly added to the sand of the mold, not the form from which the mold for casting was made.  While there are some casting flaws visible on the cooking surface this piece shows great detail and care in it’s casting.  Worth using as well as displaying.   A great example of smaller foundry work.  WIll be a great user.   This one has a little history and a lot of character.  Bottom shows pitting from use over a wood stove.  Inset heat ring.  Casting letter that appears to be  J is still visible.  Sits flat on heat ring.

Marked:  Large “8” on underside maybe a tiny “J” as a mold mark as well.

10” 3/8 diameter (excluding handle, measured at top of lip)

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips, or wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.  Decent cooking surface with some flea bite tool marks and casting flaws.  Should fill in as it gets some kitchen use.

This is a really old piece in collector grade.  Pretty, old gate marked handled griddle made c. 1870-1880 (roughly 150 years old).  Great cooking surface with great polishing marks and a few scars.   A great example of smaller foundry work.  WIll be a great user.   This one has a little history and a lot of character.  Bottom shows pitting from use over a wood stove.  Inset heat ring.  Small mark under handle could be an “x”, outside shows some casting marks.

Marked:  “8” on handle maybe a tiny “x” under the handle

    10” diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips or bow.  Bit of a wobble on a sheet of glass.  Nice cooking surface with some flea bite tool marks and some scars from use.  Should fill in as it gets some kitchen time.  Outer casting is a bit cruder, and shows some roughness and even light pitting.
