  • #2315 Mortar and pestle with wood handle pestle - 1

    Item 2315
Please note all pictures on our site are of the actual piece you will receive, not a stock photo of a similar piece.  Additionally all our pieces unless marked otherwise are fully restored and seasoned.  Just wash them and start cooking.

SOLD AS FOUND.  Lightly cleaned but not restored.

This is a museum quality piece.  I think this may well be the pestle we have ever found and we’ve certainly never seen another pestle like this one – which makes me think it may be much older than the mortar we found it with (and by which we were able to date it).  The bottom of the mortar is sprued, and the body of the mortar is painted/coated in a very old gold paint. There may be markings under the paint – and we could remove it but as it has a very cool look we’ve decided not to at this point.  interior has some pitting and light rust.

The pestle has a wooden handle with a heavy iron head that is attached to the wood by a old handmade fastener which may be partially broken or which may just not hold as well due to age.  The head does wobble on the pestle.   The pestle is very, very unique and marked in raised numbers “81 H”.

6” diameter (at top of lip), 5” 7/8 tall.  Pestle is 11” 3/4 long, iron head of pestle is 5” long

Cleaned lightly but not restored.  SOLD AS FOUND.

No cracks, chips, or wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.  Beautiful interior shape.

    $235 shipped

As always we are happy to take back pieces if you are not 100% satisfied.  (Please see return policy)

  • #2179 small sad iron tray1

    Item 2179

Please note all pictures on our site are of the actual piece you will receive, not a stock photo of a similar piece. Additionally all our pieces unless marked otherwise are fully restored and seasoned. Just wash them and start cooking.

This is the smallest double griddle/sad iron heater I’ve come across. Made for use with an old wood stove It’s a very usable piece which would also look great as a display piece. The piece isn’t perfect, it has some casting flaws which adds some roughness to the cooking surface. Has a well about 5/8” deep so it can be used for poaching, roasting, or even frying. Side “wings” allowed it to sit in a wood stove without falling.

    Marked: Unmarked.

    17” 3/4 handle to handle, outer lip to outer lip 15” 3/4” x 7” 3/4 (at the wings), 5/8” deep. Inner cooking surface 14” x 5” 3/4

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks or chips. Sits on it’s gate mark so it won’t sit flat on a sheet of glass. Cooking surface has minor tool marks and casting flaws. Should only improve with use.

    $65 shipped

  • #1532 Vollrath 20 maslin kettle01

    Item 1532

Please note all pictures on our site are of the actual piece you will receive, not a stock photo of a similar piece.  Additionally all our pieces unless marked otherwise are fully restored and seasoned.  Just wash them and start cooking.

UNRESTORED.  Sold as found.  Just cleaned with soap and water.

While most of the world calls these pieces enameled, Jacob Vollrath invested his money in porcelainizing pieces (as they called it).  is there a difference between it and regular enamel?  truth is I don’t know.   So what is a Maslin kettle?   Really is’s not that different from a dutch oven, but it is believed it was used for the cooking of grains.    Interior is white, while the outside is a pale blue.  Bottom is bare iron.

HUGE piece capable of holding 24 quarts (6 gallons) in amazing shape.  I’ve never seen one this intact.  This piece has NOT been restored but it cleaned up  fairly nicely with just soap and water with a bit more work it might be remarkable.  Porcelain cooking surface has crazing (the mosaic like look to the bottom), but appears to be more than 99% with some pin point flaws in the porcelain.  I would guess a drop of oil or two to seal them would make it perfect.  Tiny bits of the rim have some very slight chips.   Double gate marked. Some carbon and grease build up on and around heat ring.  That should come clean.  Sits flat.  Lids were not made for maslin kettles

Marked: with a raised “20” on the bottom.

15” 3/8 diameter (excluding spout and ears) 8” 1/4 tall

Just washed with soap and water, no further restoration was done.

No cracks chips on the underlying iron, but there are chips in the porcelain along the rim.  Very slight wobble when tested on a sheet of glass.  Cooking surface is porcelainized with what appears to be intact coating.

    Item 2239

If you don’t know Vollrath you are missing out on Jonathan’s very favorite maker of cast iron in the post Erie era. In general it’s very well cast, beautifully polished, and light compared to its contemporaries.

Collector grade #4. Fours are always rare and you certainly don’t see that many that are Vollrath. A beautiful example of the best of Vollrath’s castings. This is a #4 skillet with a gorgeous, almost glassy cooking surface. Sits almost flat (tiny hint of movement) and should be good on a glass top or any other stove. Ribbed handle. Cooking surface has some minor flea bite tool marks, but those should smooth away with a little use. This will be a kitchen favorite.

Marked: “4” on the handle, and has the sideways 4 on the bottom.

    7” 3/8 diameter

Cleaned via lye method, hand buffed and seasoned with 3 layers of non-GMO canola oil.

No cracks, chips. Tiny hint of wobble when tested on a sheet of glass. Cooking surface is almost glassy with a few minor areas with imperfections. Will only improve.

While most of the world calls these pieces enameled, Jaoob Vollrath invested his money in porcelainizing pieces (as they called it).  is there a difference between it and regular enamel?  truth is I don’t know.  But what I do know is that it is unbelievably rare to find them with really good coating.   So what is a Maslin kettle?   Really is’s not that different from a dutch oven, but it is believed it was used for the cooking of grains.   Slightly bigger than a number 8 dutch oven.  There is very slight crazing to the coating (the mosaic like look of the bottom).   This one has some staining that should be removable with some scrubbing and cleaning product  Interior is white, while the outside is a pale blue.  Bottom is bare iron.
